I love wigs! They give you the opportunity to transform your look without compromising your own hair. And they can be very helpful for those days when you are having a bad hair day.

One thing you must note is that, you shouldn’t neglect your own hair just because you have a wig to save the day. It is essential to ensure that your hair underneath the wig is also healthy.

Here are a few things you can do to ensure you have healthy hair under your wig.

5 ways to care for your hair under a wig

1. Wash your hair regularly

If you have it in mind to wear a wig then there is the need to wash the hair, in order to release the hair from accumulated tension and heat under the hair. Doing this helps the hair feel relax and tension free. Be sure to use a shampoo and conditioner that is good for your hair type.

You can wash your hair at least every two weeks and treat your scalp well. If your scalp gets itchy between washes, you can use a dry shampoo.

2. Drying of The Hair

Drying of ones hair comes in two ways,

  1. the use of natural air
  2. the use of the hand dryer

With these two the best way is to air dry your hair, thus using the natural air in drying your hair. This method do not exert tension or pressure on the hair but rather helps the hair to feel more relax and helps it to grow much well.

3. Braiding the hair when wearing wigs

Braiding the hair without any additive helps natural air penetrate through the hair and also help the hair not come into contact with heat while wearing wigs.

If the hair is not braided before wearing a wig, more heat will be accumulated under hair which can cause breakage of the hair and not only that, hair nutrients can be lost as well.

4. Cover the braided hair before wearing a wig

The wig should not worn after braiding but rather the braided hair should be covered with a wig cap. This prevents heat from coming in to contact with the hair. It also keeps the hair tidy when the wig is removed.

5. Do not go to bed with the wig on

Before you go to bed at night, be sure to remove the wig and cleanse your hairline, especially if you glued on the wig. This will prevent your edges from thinning.

Always remember to glue the wig to your hairline and not to your hair. To safely remove the wig, you can use olive oil, mousse or alcohol. After removing the wig, clean all the glue residue from your hairline.

Also, massage your edges and scalp with some oil before going to bed. This helps blood circulation to relieve stress and promote hair growth.

Wigs are great but it is also essential to take great care of your own hair under the wig and these simple practices can help with that.
