Jesus Christ urges us to forgive each other without limits. Though this may seem unattainable, Christ is showing us that we should forgive as many times as the opportunity arises.
Imagine a Saviour who made the ultimate sacrifice for humanity and was abused despite having done nothing wrong, yet still pleads with us to forgive. He is the true example of a role model. He didn’t hold our sins against us; instead, He died to save us.
Many people believe that forgiveness is only for the benefit of the person who has done wrong. This is not true. Forgiveness also brings healing to those who have been wronged. When you choose to forgive, you are demonstrating Christ-like behaviour. You are letting go of the hurt and pain that have weighed on your heart.
Forgiveness leads to happiness, and those who forgive also receive forgiveness from God. That’s why, in prayer, Jesus taught us to say, “Forgive us our transgressions as we forgive those who trespass against us” (Matthew 6:12). Forgiveness draws people closer together.
When you forgive someone for their wrongdoing, it not only brings you both closer but also allows you to live in peace. Make letting go a habit. Holding on to past hurts and pains can have a powerful impact on your life. It can make you bitter and keep you from moving forward, as you remain stuck thinking about the past. It can also lead to sadness and sleepless nights, which are harmful to your health and well-being.
Here are a few Bible verses about forgiveness to help you understand how God graciously forgives our transgressions and why we, too, are called to forgive others.
Prayer to help you forgive
Almighty Father,
I am grateful for your love for me. I thank you for sending your son to die for me despite my mistakes. I ask for a forgiving heart from you. Let me not focus on the pain that others inflict on me. Allow me to be able to love those who hurt me. Assist me in letting go of whatever guilt I have for myself. Assist me in letting go of whatever resentment I feel towards anyone. Give me the strength to forgive those who have wronged me. Assist me in accepting myself and others just as You have loved and accepted me despite my imperfections. In Jesus’ name, I thank you for answering my prayer. Amen
