How to deal with odors in your home

Identify and remove

Logically, in order to get rid of the bad smell, you need to remove its source. Spraying air fresheners and opening the windows can help you for a short while, but as soon as the fresh air is gone, the smell will come back.

Whether the source of the smell is mold, mildew, or even some animal carcass in your chimney or under the house, you need to call the specialist, remove the source and the foul stench will be gone. Follow the trail and see what the problem is, so you can nip it in the bud.

Natural refreshment

Opening windows and doors can sometimes be enough, especially if the air in your house is stale. If there are any musty smells present, caused by dust or lack of ventilation, let the fresh air inside.

Open the curtains and blinds, let the daylight in and it will instantly remove the unpleasant odors. Also, you should open any shut-in spaces, such as cupboards, closets, and cabinets, and air them out as well, or put some homemade fresheners inside.

Use air purifiers

In kitchens, simply creating a draft is sometimes not enough. Constant cooking, trash cans, and drains can cause plenty of foul smells which can only be resolved with the help of technology.

Like most apartments near Fort Wayneyou might already have a ventilation system or an electric fan installed, but those can only blow some of the smells away. In order to completely remove the smells, you should rely on quality air purifiers. They will clean the air, remove the odors, and bring enough freshness back to the kitchen.

What is more, you can always bring them to other poorly ventilated rooms and get rid of any smelly particles in the air. To do so, all you have to do is spend some time checking out the air purifiers reviews online and find a perfect one for you.

Use a crawl space dehumidifier

Sometimes, the crawl space in your home can be the source of odor in your home. If necessary steps are not taken to prevent high humidity levels in the crawl space, it can lead to the growth of mold and mildew which can cause musty odors in the home.

Also, some bugs and tiny organisms flourish in damp, dark, and chilly environments and your crawl space can easily become a home for such organisms.

With that said, a crawl space dehumidifier installation will be all you need in order to completely remove the excess moisture in the crawl space that enables the growth of mold and mildew.

Get rid of pests

Pests in the home can cause a lot of problems. Apart from the fact that these pests can be harmful to your health, they can also affect the odor in your home. Sometimes, these pests can die and when you can’t find where the body is, they’ll end up stinking up the whole house. This is why it’s essential to consider professional pest control services in Fort Myers to address and prevent such issues effectively.

So it is very important to get rid of all pests in your home. Although you can try doing this yourself, some tasks are better left to the professionals. Especially when it comes to finding the pests in hiding.

Hiring professionals such as TX pest control companies in Texas, will help you completely eradicate these pests from your home.

Tame the pet odor

Even though we love our pets, they can produce great amounts of uncomfortable odors. What is more, sometimes it is hard to get rid of it because they are constantly there and the smell becomes embedded in the fiber of our furniture, carpets, curtains, etc.

In order to successfully get rid of pet smells, you can rely on activated charcoal. It is a form of carbon that has been “activated” which makes it extremely porous, and a great absorbent of various odors.

All you have to do is place a few pieces around the house, near your dog’s bed or cat’s litter box and you’ll successfully get rid of all the bad smells.

Mold in the bathroom

The bathroom is the wettest place in the house, and it can easily become the dirtiest. In order to remove all the smells, you will have to clean it regularly.

However, standard cleaning products are sometimes not enough. You can easily make your own cleaning products that are guaranteed to remove any urine and mold smells.

Make a mix of 3 parts water, 1 part cheap vodka, and up to 20 drops of essential oils such as citrus or lavender; put it in a spray bottle and keep it in the bathroom.

Now, every time you are cleaning, use this mixture and your bathroom will be clean and the odors will be gone.

When mold in the bathroom is left unattended for long, it can be very hard to get rid of. When that happens, you will need mold damage restoration services from professionals in order to remove the mold and get your home back to a liveable condition once again.

Another thing that can cause problems with smells is the doors of the washing machine since they are sealed tight, which allows mold and mildew to grow and spread, and therefore stink.

You can easily use your homemade product to clean the doors and don’t forget to keep them open between washings.

Sewer lines problems

Sewer line problems can be a reason for bad smell too. To get rid of them, you can pour baking soda down the drain,  leave it for about 10 minutes, and then pour one cup of vinegar.

One of the reasons causing plumbing issues is the wipes that snag on any imperfection in sewer pipes and create a mass that will grow to plug. Avoid flushing disposable wipes even if you are using so-called flushable wet wipes.

You can also consider investing in a macerator pump for your toilet, sink, and bathtub. These nifty devices are equipped with stainless steel blades that can break down solid waste into a slurry. Usual culprits like sanitary pads or toilet paper will no longer cause you any plumbing headaches. Of course, you will still need to be careful with what goes down your drain. But in case anything unwanted slips through, the macerator pump can take care of it for you.

Don’t let your home become smelly. Not only is it uncomfortable if your home smells bad, but it can also be very unhealthy. Air out the rooms frequently and rely on your air purifiers and homemade cleaning products to keep everything clean and odor-free.

Thank you for sharing! Very often, odors signal serious problems in a home. And the source of the problem is not always obvious. For example, something smells fishy… but it’s not fish. Well, likely not. If you smell fish with no fish in sight, you could have an overheating electrical component somewhere.

I like your suggestions for removing blockages in pipes, because they are safe for pipes themselves. Many homeowners prefer using off-the-shelf cleaners for this, but in fact it causes more harm than good, because not only do commercial cleaners corrode the clog but also corrode pipes. The corrosion can cause leaks and even bursts of the pipes.

To get rid of unpleasant smells in your home, consider installing carbon filters in your HVAC system. Made of activated carbon, also called activated charcoal, carbon air filters can help trap odors caused by pets, cooking, and mildew. They also capture airborne particles such as dust, pet dander and more.
